St. James’ Settlement True Light Home for the Aged Completes Renovation
Incorporating Eight Principles of ‘Feeling of Home’
with Support from The D. H. Chen Foundation to Extend Warmth

 
The True Light Home for the Aged, under the Continuing Care Services of St. James' Settlement, has always been committed to providing high-quality elderly care services. To meet the growing demand　for residential care homes for the elderly and further enhance service quality, the True Light Home for the Aged received generous support from The D. H. Chen Foundation for a comprehensive renovation. The project follows a person-centred approach, incorporating psychological well-being model and the application of gerontechnology to create a safe, comfortable, and warm environment, extending the sense of ‘home away from home’ for residents.
 
A Thanksgiving Gathering was held on 17^th March to celebrate the completion of the renovation project. The event was honoured by the presence of officiating guests, including Ms. Karen Cheung, Trustee and Chief Strategist of The D. H. Chen Foundation; Dr. Edward Leung, Executive Committee member of St. James' Settlement and Chairman of Advisory Committee for Residential Services (Continuing Care); Ms. Lysander Tso, Chairman of True Light Villa Limited; Ms. Mabel Siu, District Social Welfare Officer (Eastern/Wan Chai) of Social Welfare Department; and Ms. Wah Bun Chan, Resident of True Light Home for the Aged.
 
Ms. Karen Cheung, Trustee and Chief Strategist of The D. H. Chen Foundation, shared: “We are deeply grateful to witness the completion of the True Light Home for the Aged’s transformation, guided by a shared commitment to ageing well and to dignified, sustainable eldercare. Working alongside the St. James’ Settlement team and like-minded partners, we were honoured to contribute beyond financial support, creating space for the Home to enhance their service culture and care practices, facilitated through our programme partner. The Home’s holistic renewal fosters a more caring and nurturing environment for the older adults, their carers, and the staff, marking an evolution that we hope will inspire a more person-centred and compassionate eldercare sector.”
 
Dr. Edward Leung, Executive Committee member of St. James' Settlement and Chairman of Advisory Committee for Residential Services (Continuing Care), remarked, "We are grateful for the generous donation from The D. H. Chen Foundation, as well as the support from the True Light Villa Limited, Hong Kong Housing Society and the architectural team. The renovation has significantly improved the facilities, increasing the number of single rooms to provide residents with more privacy and independent space. These improvements not only enhance the quality of life for our residents but also ensure the long-term development of our services to meet society's needs. We hope that more elderly residents in their final stages of life can spend their remaining time in a high-quality living environment.” Ms. Josephine Lee, Chief Executive Officer of St. James’ Settlement, said, "We would like to extend our gratitude to our residents, their carers and colleagues at the True Light Home for the Aged, which made the smooth completion of the renovation possible. In the future, we will uphold our person-centred approach to provide a more tailored living environment for the elderly.”
 
The Thanksgiving Gathering also welcomed residents and their carers to witness this significant milestone for the True Light Home for the Aged. Ms. Wah Bun Chan, who has lived at the True Light Home for the Aged for six years, shared that she was previously in a four-person room, but is now able to move into a single room following the renovation project, allowing her to enjoy her own space. She sincerely expressed her gratitude to The D. H. Chen Foundation for their donations and care for the elderly, as these have greatly improved the living environment and the newly created open activity space is bright and beautiful, making her feel satisfied.
 

Promoting Adoption of Gerontechnology and Green Elements
Following the renovation, the True Light Home for the Aged will offer 91 residential care places, providing 24-hour nursing and interdisciplinary care services. For the facility upgrades, the project has significantly increased the number of single rooms by about 4.5 times, enhancing residents' privacy and independence, while also introducing twin suite and barrier-free communal spaces on each floor. Gerontechnology has been widely used, including smart fall prevention systems, electronic care management systems, and assistive devices.
 
Furthermore, with a people-centred approach, the architectural team has significantly redesigned the Home's spatial layout, allowing residents, carers, and staff to fully enjoy natural light and verdant views. Key features include reorienting most rooms from facing dense streetscapes to embracing lush hillside greenery; and adding skylit spaces and a rooftop garden on the ninth floor, where residents and carers can share more comfortable moments together. In design details, the team incorporated rounded corners for enhanced safety; rooms now feature integrated large-pane glass windows, replacing traditional standard ones and allowing more natural light – altogether creating a warm, liveable environment where residents feel deeply cared for.
For the service principle, the True Light Home for the Aged has incorporated the 8 principles of ‘Feeling of Home’, co-created with The D. H. Chen Foundation through the collaboration of multidisciplinary team. These pillars include Maintaining a Supportive and Friendly Environment, Ensuring Independent Living, Engaging in Meaningful and Purposeful Activities, Using Information and Communication Technology effectively, Respecting Others and Receiving Recognition, Maintaining Strong and Sustainable Community Connections, Encouraging Positive Interaction and Communication and Promoting Effective Emotional Adjustment and Wellbeing. To provide residents with high-quality elderly care services that feel like home, we incorporate ‘PERMA’, the psychological well-being model which includes of five elements: P (Positive Emotion), E (Engagement), R (Positive Relationships), M (Meaning), and A (Accomplishment) to ensure residents’ psychological, social, and daily needs are fully addressed.
